Portland, Oregon, May 29th
Last night I hit the road in the rain, just wanting to get back on the bike after having been away for the long weekend. It ended up being a great ride, but it never stopped raining. I did just under 40 miles, so the miles are picking up a bit. I actually didn’t realize how wet I was until I walked into a gas station to fill up on water and, once in a dry place, felt and looked like I had just stepped out of a shower. I left a puddle everywhere I went in the little mart.
So, I talked with Aaron Smith today and he seems to think my training has gone well. I will have to pick it up for at least two really hard, long rides this week, then that will be it. From what I’ve been told, there is no way to prepare completely for as many daily miles as we will be doing. The first two weeks are going to be rough. But for some reason I am looking forward to it. I think it will be easy compared to having to wrap up the rough draft of this book. More later!

With less than two weeks to go, I’m back in Portland and will spend the rest of my time writing and riding and getting ready to be away for seven weeks. I snapped this shot of some kids up at the Griffith Observatory during my stay in Los Angeles. I told them I was going to ride my bike across America but they didn’t care. I tried to join them but the one on the end kept brushing my hands off his shoulders. Anyway, I snapped this shot and I thought it was cute.

I’m sitting in the Burbank airport listening to the women next to me talk about their kids and I’m loving the conversation. Had a great holiday weekend with a group from Ecclesia, a church in Hollywood. Loved the people and loved the time. The retreat was in the mountains we will be pedaling through on the first couple days of the tour so I am motivated to head home and start training on some hills. I’m getting more excited about the trip by the day. It is coming fast. Thanks for following along. And hello to all the folks at Ecclesia!!! See you again soon.

I’m sending this update from my phone. I’m in California speaking at a friends retreat. I haven’t done a retreat in a long time so this should be interesting. I’m going to do magic tricks. I’m going to sing. I’m going to play ultimate frisbee. Not sure if I’ll have cell coverage on the mountains so this might be it till Monday. Thanks for checking in. Talk to you again when I’m done retreating.
