Portland, Oregon May Something
Caught Brett Dennen, Mason Jennings and Missy Higgins tonight at the Roseland and enjoyed the show. Dennen’s voice is something like a saxaphone and Missy Higgins came out and backed him up for a bit and that song was worth the cost of the ticket. But Mason Jennings closed the show (they rotate every night) and he and his fans sang themselves into midnight.
Jennings manages to engage his audience with three-note range and words that repeat rather than rhyme. Somehow it works. He has the wit Lyle Lovett and about three-quarter the composing ability of Dylan. He’s like a new Dylan, some people have said. I think he is a thinking mans Jack Johnson. Anyway, it was a great show. I know they are in Seattle next and Eugene after that. If they come to you, take some friends and enjoy the show.

As a saxophonist, I feel the need to point out that it’s actually spelled saxOphone, not saxAphone. Get it right, Miller!

ahahahah, dave. thanks so much. i clicked on this page reeling from just having sent in another entry with the word “to” instead of “too.” that’s the trouble with being a writer, you are judged much more. the truth is i am a terrible speller. terrible. but i don’t take full blame for this mistake. i think part of the blame should go to whoever named the instrument the saxophone. i played the tuba in high school. four simple letters. i like the guy who named the tuba better than the guy who named the saxophone. that said, though, i’ve not seen too many jazz bands that front a tuba. it’s 6 one way half a dozen the other. regardless, thanks for correcting my terrible spelling.

Well done Dave - also a saxOphonists (”named by” Adolphe Sax in 1842, patented in 1846 - not that it will help you finish your book OR pedal across America!) I too take the blunt of this spelling error, but no worries Don - it’s alot more common then you think… Our worship leader even spells it wrong when he send me emails of what our song list will be! Gosh, I can’t stand these “know it all” types that just HAVE to say something ;)… God bless my friend
